Take a Stroll
When you stroll down the Champs-Elysées, (Elysian Fields) you are strolling down the most famous avenue in Paris. The twelve avenues that radiate from the center are lined with beautiful gardens and parks and where many a visitor and native while away an afternoon, visiting with friends and family. So while you are in Paris be prepared to grab your walking shoes and prepare for an experience of a lifetime.
Gardens Galore
The lovely gardens and chestnut trees that line the avenue are a true delight to the senses. Depending on the time of year, the gardens are full of plants, bursting with color and scent, the ultimate place for a lover of flora and fauna.
The Rond-Point is a unique garden, landscaped into a circle, it sits along the avenue. A magnificent water fountain is in the center and flower beds are trimmed so the garden resembles a very large flower bouquet.
The Grand Palais is here along with the smaller Petit Palais, built for the 1900 exposition but now host permanent and temporary museum collections.
Arch of Triumph
At the western end of the Champs-Elysées you will find the Arc de Triomphe (Arch of Triumph). Started in 1806 and finished in 1836 by Napoleon it was meant as a monument to his troops. The huge stone arch is a fascinating piece of architecture rising high above the streets. It is quite a view to drive down the street and see the Arch ahead of you.
Square of Peace
At the other end of the Champs-Elysées you can see the Place de la Concorde (Square of Peace). In this square there once stood a guillotine, with which Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI were put to death, as were many other French men and women. There are also eight large statues and several delightful fountains. You can also see the Obelisk of Luxor in this square, a magnificent stone pillar from Egypt.
The Latest in Fashion
Along avenue Montaigne you can find fashion at its height. Designer stores like Dior, Prada and Chanel are tucked in along this avenue. The Theatre des Champs-Elysees is also on this avenue and has been home to some sensational debuts and premieres and was the scene of a major riot in 1929.
